Is the immediate or extended release tablet better for me?

This depends on how quick you need the medication to work. The immediate-release is best for fast-acting results, while the extended-release provides a steady longer-lasting effect throughout the day.

Should I use the 1mg or 2mg tablet?

If you are using the medication for the first time, start with the 1mg tablet. As your dosage increases, switch to the 2mg tablet. Towards the end of your treatment, when the dosage needs to be gradually decreased, you can use the 1mg tablet again. Elderly people or those with pre-existing conditions may find a lower recommended dose is more suitable, in their circumstances.

What is the difference between Alprazolam and Xanax?

The main difference between the medications is the name. Alprazolam is the popular generic name of the anti-anxiety drug, as well as the name of the main active ingredient, whilst Xanax is the more common brand name. Generally, brand name medications are more expensive, so there may also be a difference in the price. Basically approved generics offer the same constituency, make-up, effectiveness and so on as original medications, meaning they are identical but typically much cheaper.

Why are the tablets different colours?

The tablets are usually produced in a range of colours (orange, blue, white, yellow, green) to differentiate between the strength, indicated by mg (e.g. 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 2mg). The colour and shape also depends on the manufacturers’ preferences.

Are these anti-anxiety medications suitable for children?

No, alprazolam and Xanax is recommended for adults, 18 years and older.

How long should I take the medication?

The medication is usually recommended as a short-term treatment, which can be 2 to 4 weeks, or longer. Your doctor or pharmacist should advise you on the duration of your treatment based on your specific medical condition or needs.
